Los disturbios raciales por la muerte del afroamericano George Floyd a manos de la policía el lunes pasado en Mineápolis, se extendieron por ciudades de todo Estados Unidos, con incendios, saqueos y enfrentamientos entre manifestantes y agentes antidisturbios.
En Mineápolis cientos de manifestantes desafiaron el toque de queda impuesto y, como en las últimas tres noches, repitieron esta madrugada los incendios, actos de vandalismo y saqueos de comercios.
Las autoridades de Minesota (Estados Unidos) anunciaron este sábado que han ordenado la movilización de toda la Guardia Nacional, el cuerpo de reserva del estado, para hacer frente a los disturbios durante las protestas por la muerte de un afroamericano a manos de la policía, que presionó el cuello de la víctima con su rodilla y provocó que muriera asfixiado.
El gobernador de Minesota, Tim Walz, anunció en una rueda de prensa «la completa movilización» de la Guardia Nacional minesotana y explicó que esta es una «acción que nunca se ha tomado en los 164 años de historia de la Guardia Nacional de Minesota».
«Lo de anoche fue una broma, sobre que esto era acerca de la muerte de George Floyd. Va de atacar la sociedad civil, instigar el miedo y perturbar nuestras grandes ciudades», dijo el político demócrata, que instantes después aclaraba que los efectivos de este cuerpo de reserva también fueron movilizados durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial.

Walz destacó que «la dinámica» ha cambiado desde el martes, cuando las manifestaciones fueron pacíficas: «Hemos visto más gente de fuera de la ciudad, esto es inaceptable». «Para garantizar que seguimos teniendo lo que es necesario, tenemos que asegurarnos de que movilizaremos la mayor fuerza», indicó, tras alertar de que las ciudades de St. Paul y Minneapolis «están bajo asalto». En esta última localidad, varios manifestantes incendiaron una comisaría el pasado jueves, que tuvo que ser abandonada.
La Guardia Nacional opera bajo jurisdicción estatal pero puede ser utilizada por el gobernador de un estado para ayudar a dicho gobierno durante desastres y otras emergencias. También pueden ser llamadas por el presidente de los Estados Unidos o actuar a petición del Congreso.
Extensión de las protestas
Las protestas y disturbios, que empezaron en Mineápolis y se han extendido a otras partes de EEUU, se desencadenaron tras el fallecimiento el lunes pasado de George Floyd, un hombre de raza negra que perdió la vida a manos de policías cuando era detenido en esa localidad.
En un intento de contener la situación, las autoridades declararon el viernes un toque de queda nocturno durante dos días en Mineápolis y la vecina Saint Paul, ambas conocidas como Twin Cities (‘Ciudades gemelas’), que no logró evitar nuevos altercados.

En la misma rueda de prensa, el general John Jensen, al frente de la Guardia Nacional en Minesota, aseguró que para este mediodía habrá movilizado 2.500 efectivos de esa fuerza, frente a los 1.700 que se había anunciado anteriormente que iban a desplegarse esta mañana, aunque subrayó que no son suficientes por lo que han solicitado «recursos a nivel nacional».
En ese sentido reveló que ha pedido asistencia al Pentágono y que ha mantenido conversaciones en las últimas veinticuatro horas conversaciones con el secretario de Defensa, Mark Esper. «Estamos mirando qué recursos podemos tener, si son de inteligencia o de otro tipo», destacó sin dar más detalles.
Jensen detalló que la Guardia Nacional de Minesota dispone de 13.200 efectivos, pero que no todos se podrán desplegar porque no todos están listos por falta de entrenamiento.
Mientras, en el estado de Kentucky, el gobernador Andy Beshear informó este sábado de que ha llamado a la Guardia Nacional para «mantener la paz» en la ciudad de Louisville, donde ha habido protestas las dos últimas noches por la muerte en marzo de una mujer de raza negra, Breonna Taylor, que falleció por disparos de la policía en su casa.
